OLGSI (Outdoor Learning Gardens Summer Institute)

Overview

            The OLGSI is a summer garden camp based in the Outdoor Learning Gardens of Atkinson Elementary in Portland, Oregon.  Through Place Based Learning and hands-on exposure, students have the opportunity to gain skills in the Natural Sciences, engage in gardening techniques and sustainable living, explore the collaborative expressions of The Arts and Science, and create civic action through community based projects. OLGSI is 4 week summer day camp run since 2010 and encourages play, questions, exploration, and self-expression.  All costs for the program are on a sliding scale, allowing families to contribute what best fits their needs.

Key Audience

            This program is open to all students grades K-5 during the school year.

Work-Trade

            Work-trade has helped bring over 20 students to camp over the past three years.  Examples of Trade have included time during the camp day as assistants to the program, or as guest speakers, as well as before and after camp day help and clean up.  Take home small projects home for the camp season that aide in the camp.  Creation of art projects for and with the students.  Donating or securing supplies. 

Site

            Historically OLGSI occurs on Public School Grounds through a partnership with Title VII Indian Education Program ACE (Academic Cultural Enrichment) who handles all Civic Use of Building (CUB) Permits and official Portland Public School documentation. OLGSI collaborates weekly with ACE through one of the following: an art activity, a literacy activity, a sensory activity, a gardening project, or a cultural activity.

            8am-4:30pm for staff

            9am-3pm for students
